Under primärvalet i Kalifornien agerade han som senatorns privatchaufför, skriver skådespelaren på sin Facebook-sida. Han skriver: When initially invited, I was up in Washington state filming on Z Nation. I considered asking production to give me a couple of days off to fly back and drive, that's how passionately I feel about the campaign. After the first block of filming was completed, however, I was able to fly back to L.A. & drive in Bernie's motorcade for three days. It was especially satisfying & exciting because I got to share the experience with my partner Mercy Malick, who had already driven the previous week. So then began the exciting adventure of driving in the Bernie motorcade. Gatt arbetade också som volontär under Obamas presidentvalskampanj 2012.
